Heyman, the producer of all eight Harry Potter films, was immediately struck by Radcliffe’s talent when he auditioned for the role of the Boy Who Lived at age 11. Over the decade that they worked together on the movies, Heyman became far more than Radcliffe’s boss – he was his guardian angel, helping guide him through the tricky waters of childhood stardom.
“David was like a father figure to me on set,” Radcliffe said in a recent interview. “He always had my back and was looking out for me. I wouldn’t have gotten through it all without him.”
Protecting Radcliffe’s Childhood
Acting from age 11 to 21 on one of the biggest franchises in movie history could easily have led Radcliffe down some dark paths. Plenty of child stars spiral into bad behavior or substance abuse. “David really encouraged me to stretch my wings outside of Harry,” said Radcliffe. “He knew I didn’t want to be typecast and guided me toward varied roles.”

Though the Potter films wrapped years ago, Radcliffe and Heyman remain extremely close. Heyman said he is immensely proud watching Radcliffe’s career continue to bloom.
“It’s so gratifying seeing Dan grow into an accomplished adult actor,” said Heyman. “I feel lucky to have been there from the beginning.”
In turn, Radcliffe said he’s forever thankful for Heyman’s mentoring throughout his adolescence.
“I wouldn’t be where I am without David looking out for me back then,” Radcliffe said. “Everyone knows him as the producer, but he was so much more than that to me. He’s family.”
So while audiences know Heyman as the man who brought Potter to life, his role as Radcliffe’s secret mentor is just as invaluable. Thanks to Heyman’s protective guidance, the Boy Who Lived matured into a grounded, well-adjusted actor with a myriad of exciting career paths ahead of him.
